The .net extension is naturally the second best and most popular choice if dot com is unavailable. No arguing that and the numbers speak for themselves. All other gTLD domains suck... Big time. They are all worthless and I wouldn't even know what to do with "premium" keyword domains that end in .mobi .travel .info .biz .tel and so on. I would not even want to spend a dime on the registration, not to mention development and marketing efforts... Really.
The dot org gTLD has it's purpose and I do like it, so it is my third choice if com/net is unavailable but you have to be careful and plan ahead.. Setting up e-commerce sites that are selling products or services on .org isn't so smart, however launching a website in guide / review style on a .org of course makes the most sense so that works out nicely over the long run. You can still market stuff here and there but you have to do so in a way that isn't so obvious.
Right now there are about 80,000,000 registered dot com domains. The growth has been explosive since 2002, starting at around 20,000,000 back then and doubling almost every 2 years. Now if you follow the domain industry closely, you will see the growth has really slowed down since 2008... Why??! Because there is only so many domains that make sense registering and owning.. I have a lot more to say about this, but that is for another post heh.
The .net gTLD growth however isn't slowing down as much as dot com is anytime soon... We start out in 2004 with 4,000,000 domains... 2006 we're over 7,000,000 domains. Right now in 2009 we got over 12,000,000 registered .net domains and a lot more of them are active sites. It's going to be very interesting to see what happens over the next couple of years but one thing is for sure.. There is a lot of opportunities in the .net gTLD and it is the 2nd best domain investment after dot com VS. any other extensions out there. The prices are 10x - 100x cheaper as well on the aftermarket.. $$$$$$$$ !!!!
Dot net's are really great for development, affil marketing and everything else that .com is used for. Best part about .net domains is that it costs a lot less and it is much easier getting in on the action. Doesn't matter if you are manually registering them for $8 or buying off of expired auctions at $60 or $100 a pop. It is money well spent if you are finding the right domains and snapping em up. Good 1, 2 and 3 keyword domains that end in .net have quite the bit of potential.. Worth taking notice of what's currently going on before it is too late.
Look man... Manually registering .net domains up to a few month's ago only cost $4.75 or something like that so if you had wholesale pricing activated with a registrar such as Fabulous or Moniker you got lots of steals.. I've been hand registering lots of keyword .net domains for years, because it is a no brainer. I've sold many of them to resellers (domainers / investors) for 10x or more on average... $5 spent... $50 sale... Not a bad ROI right?! How about hundreds of those sales per month??! It's not a bad biz. It adds up... DUH!!!!!
When .org domains had a promo going on for $1.99 registration fee not so long ago.... Guess how many I registered??! Yes.. Thousands of them and I made way more than 10x ROI. So anyway's... Man.. Just wake up. Look around and try to recognize the opportunities on your own. They are all out there. Domain investing couldn't be easier in 2009 but you can't honestly expect people like me and other successful domain investors such as Rick Schwartz, Frank Schilling or whoever to hold your hand and help you make it in this biz.
Snap outta it man... That is never going to happen... Start by looking at the right places if you want to get on the fast track. Start by doing your homework and do it consistently.
