My personal favorites and the ones that I always recommend to clients are the following, in no particular order: Aggressive PPC monetization, lead captures and affiliate content integration / co-brands. I've been using each and every one of those monetization methods for many years now and they each have many positives as well as some negatives too! The great thing about development though is that you have plenty of options to choose from. A ton of options!! The opportunities are virtually endless. If one thing doesn't work, you can easily go with something else. The monetization of the entire operation is always the easy part too. Only takes a few minutes to sort out... It really is :)
You don't have to be a genius to make money with developed web sites. Nope. You don't... But what you do need is traffic. If there is no eye balls (visitors) at your site.. Then who exactly are you going to serve the ads to and try to convert into customers / referrals to other affils?! Heh.. So, assuming you have the traffic... It's pretty easy to figure out when something works and when something doesn't. You are either happy with the payouts or you are not. If the money is good... Job well done!! If there isn't any profits coming in or simply not enough to cover the on-going costs and so on... You need to optimize the ad setup or use different ones... Because obviously something isn't right!
You just have to find the right approach. Sometimes you will get it from the first time and then sometimes you won't. It depends on a couple of variables. Every site is different and so is it's traffic quality / sources. Sometimes you will have to try a lot of things before you are able to turn in a decent profit but that is the way it goes folks... Hey! You picked the niche... You picked the site to mess around with... So, it shouldn't be a big surprise. That is why you should always build sites about familiar topics. Stuff that you know pays well, which you can monetize easily too. It's all about doing the research up front.
I personally stick mostly to Real Estate / Travel and various Entertainment / Internet related categories... I've become an "expert" in that stuff and so should you. At least in one area. You should try to be the best in. Being all over the place sucks and you aren't able to focus 100%. If you haven't found your "niche" yet... How do you?! Well, it's that something where you see opportunities. It's that something which really draws you into it. It is that something that you are excited to work on and ready to make it work. It's just something which you clearly understand and want to deal with. Simple as that!
Below is a more aggressive pay per click monetization approach that we've deployed across many Real Estate / Travel sites and found to work really well. Throughout the content pages it usually gets around 20% CTR on the ads and on the custom search we get anywhere from 30 - 50% on average. Almost 2x!
The other type of monetization technique that we have been using for many years now successfully across 1000's of mass developed Real Estate sites specifically is a lead capture setup where you get "business leads" directly over to somebody to process and close. Basically, there is no other ads or distractions displayed on the site other than a the lead capture text links in big fonts / animated banners with a nice call to action.
We place them strategically at all of the hot spots and usually get at least a 5% submission ratio. Some times even higher at 10% and up. Once again, it really depends on a couple of variables, such as the quality of traffic and service that is being offered. The "sales pitch" also has to be very compelling and get the visitor hooked instantly. You want to also provide a phone # and/or e-mail somewhere. You want to have all bases covered. Some people prefer to e-mail, some do it the old fashioned way and call via the phone... It's all good!
The last technique is one of my favorite because you make the most money with it for the most part and it works particularly well with adult websites. It works with mainstream sites too of course, such as anything related to shopping.. Think eBay, Jamster, etc. Basically... You can get a direct xml "feed" or access through an affiliate network to a ton of promotional content. It is available to you as long as you are an active affiliate of that service / program and you can manipulate it however you like for the most part. You provide a "preview" of what is available on your website and link up to the actual service / product using your tracking codes and it's a done deal... $$$ !!
So those are three proven ways to monetize website traffic. Of course you can mix and match and have all three, or the first and third and so on... With our new DomainMassDevelopment.com services --- we can do it all. We provide a customized solution for each and every client. Whatever your requirements are.. We can meet them. The above three examples were just some very basic recent works. There is a lot of cool stuff that can be done with development and there is a whole lot of money to be made too if you know what you are doing :)
