Here we are in 2009 and the WWW or as most simply refer to it the web has been around for 20 years strong... The internet had it's 20th birthday few days ago. Good stuff! Some of my more "geeky friends" had a big time bash down in an NYC club to celebrate. Unfortunately I had to work it up so couldn't make it. Seriously.. Some of them celebrated being on the internet for 10+ years.. Some 12.. Some 15, 17, etc... LOL! I have been on the internet since I was a lil kid since the mid 90's. I love absolutely everything about it. I fell in love with the internet the first time I got on it... It's great :)
So anyways, something pretty funny happened the other day... Me and my girlfriend were about to head out to grab lunch and meet up with some friends at a country club. It was a beautiful sunny day here in NY and everybody was heading out.. Spring time! So as we are getting ready and stuff I get caught up with work and have to take care of one thing here online before leaving.. I tell my girlfriend to go get the dogs outside and wait for me in the car.
So those 5 minutes that I am handling an issue online quickly turn into 10 and 15... But it's funny because she isn't coming in and yelling at me to "get my ass out of the house" and "get off the comp" as she usually does... I'm thinking to myself, wow.. What is going on? I head towards the window and glance... I see her talking to some guy and a black SUV parked. Hm... Ok, so maybe it's some guy who is lost asking for directions or something? I didn't make much of it.. 30 mins go by and I am still on the computer trying to resolve this one issue... I'm thinking, argh.. I better tell my girlfriend that It's going to be a little while longer and that I'm sorry for making her wait.
Uhh.. I look, and she is still talking to this guy and their both laughing and stuff.. Hmmm.. And this guy is now playing with my dog too! Hmm... So who is this guy exactly?! We weren't expecting any company and there isn't too many people passing by here at all as I live in a very quiet and private area... So is he hitting on my girlfriend or trying to pick her up...and why is he playing with my dog!! LOL. So, enough is enough and I head outside trying to see what is going on and figure this out. As I approach him, I see him smiling at me and before a single word even comes out of my mouth he reaches out his hand for handshake and he's like "hi im blah blah nice to meet you" hmm... OK?
Then my girlfriend tells me that this guy is actually running in the local elections to be on some board.. I don't remember already what position exactly. So I say "great, nice to meet you too... but we really need to go as we are running late " and he's like ok no problem, thanks for your time and i appreciate the support... Before we part ways I ask him "so, do you have a website? where i can look you up and get more info" of course I was expecting for him to tell me "yea, its myname.com or whatever" but his reply is "oh, i dont have one.. sorry" what the... !!! Why don't you have a website, man! I just don't get it.
First of all, this guy was about my age.. Maybe even younger. 20 or 21 years old max... Fresh outta college. I would hope that he knows about internet and the importance of having presence online... But no! He doesn't have anything. So as we are driving in the car, I ask my girlfriend what the hell they were talking about for so long and she's like "we were talking about dogs.. he has a cute doggy... he showed me pics on his iphone" lol.. So I ask her about some of his "qualifications" for the position that he is running and she couldn't even tell me one except him mentioning that he grew up here and that his dad has a big law firm which I am indeed familiar with. They spent at least half an hour talking about dogs... Very nice. Politicians... eh. Shmoozing!
It's really no surprise though, because his dad who has a very well known law firm here locally doesn't have a website either... I guess it runs in the family. It's too bad. People who don't have an internet presence are really missing out. Big time. It's 2009 and everybody should have a website. If people are going on the internet and trying to search for you and can't find you... That is not good. I still meet people and companies all the time that do not have websites.
I don't get these people and companies... Freakin dinosaurs! There are still tons of commercials running on TV and RADIO too where they only mention a phone number such as 888 and whatever and absolutely no website... Who the hell remembers those phone numbers to call?! Man... Some people are just idiots. We have come a long way the past 10 years or so as the internet has taken off into mainstream but we still have a long ways to go. There are still too many people that don't get it that need to be educated about the benefits of internet presence via domains (direct navigation) and search engine marketing (natural or paid) so there is many opportunities for web designers/developers as well as search engine marketers... A lot of money to be made!!
So "where the hell is your website" ?!?? If you don't have one.. You better put up one... Fast! Run run... Go go go! :) Everybody should have a website... Especially if you run your own business / company !!! Duhhhhh. You can stay open 24/7/365 on the internet and reach out to the masses. Don't you want to? I guess some people don't. Idiots... Are you smart ? Do you have a website? ;)
