The $10k is just an example, but yea... What is the best way to spend lets say $10k on domains and development this days.... What does it get you? It all really depends whether you are thinking long term which is a year or two at minimum or whether you wanna be in and out fast which means short term and anything less than one year. Well right off bat I will tell you that buying just one or two good generic domains for development isn't the best option. Now of course it is the "safe" and a pretty much "guaranteed" way to invest your money wisely but I do not want to write about this type of scenario as developing just one or two domains is quite boring and isn't what I do or what the site is all about.
Focusing on just a handful of sites has it's advantages but the opportunities are very limited at the end of the day and I don't like all my eggs in one basket and diversification is more important and often than not it will take you literally at least a year if not multiple years to get your money back and roll in a profit if you do get lucky and do everything right with those one or two generic domains... It adds lots of pressure and other stuff so over time it could become a real drag. I am not comfortable waiting so long... The internet is a crazy and weird place and things change quiet often... Could be very different tomorrow for the better or worse and you never know....But that is just me.
What is the smart way to spend the $10k? Well, it depends on a couple of things.. Lets say if you are a beginner and do not know much about development --- you should probably buy an established network of websites and play around with it first before you do anything else on your own.. Learn how things work and so on. Now if you have been developing domains for a while and know more or less how to build websites and make money with them you should buy enough good domains that you are comfortable with developing.
This number of domains may be 100 for some or 500. Domains are cheap and cost like $8 --- Sure it will take time to develop them and keep this in mind. You do want to reserve the best domains, meaning registering them as soon as you set your eye on em and have an idea but be sure you plan accordingly. Development takes time and money. Before registering any domains you should always first come up with a plan and set of ideas of how the website network will be structured and what type of content it will have... What type of monetization you will be pushing and so on.
For the seasoned and organized professional developer $10k should be split at approximately 30-50% towards registering good keyword domains and the rest on development costs.... Meaning scripts to automate things and unique content. With 100s of domains you have many more opportunities to generate traffic, make money and a better roi almost instantly... You will make it back within the first 6 month's if you do everything right if not sooner...
You just have to make sure you pick the right keyword domains and match them up with the proper website setup and monetization and it should be a winner. Doing your research is real important and as always I stress this is critical to do... You have to know as much as possible about what you are getting yourself into.
Most people who register dozens or hundreds of domains who do plan to do some development down the road really have no clue about the keyword they are registering... They see a decent keyword domain available and quickly rush to login and register it within their registrar. But do they know that the keyword is very competitive and that it will take them thousands of dollars just to setup a decent unique site and do the right search engine optimization??
I bet you 90/100 people do not do any research and will lose money on this type of domains that they register and even if they do develop... Odds aren't in their favor because there really isn't much good that will come out of basically just gambling with random domains without first doing the proper research.
You are probably thinking to yourself.. But what are this good domains worth registering that can make lots of money?? What type of research do I need to do exactly? What should I look out for or try to avoid doing... Short answer is lots and if you haven't already noticed that I don't link to any outside sources or make any specific references to anything in particular --- but I do give hints and such where you should further investigate and which direction you need to go to.
At the end of the day, you have to learn all this stuff on your own and you should never take one man's word as the sure way to do something or a guaranteed way for results. You can accomplish everything and anything you set your mind to with hard work and that hard work starts the moment you start digging around for information. The internet has lots of information on any topic --- so make use of it.
