Thanks to Bernie Madoff, Sonja Kohn and Bloomberg.com we got loads of traffic and free publicity and maybe even a few $xx,xxx real estate deals in the works for one of my clients... OK, so you are probably wondering, what the hell are you talking about? Well, let me explain how and what went down. So as a routine check of all of my clients websites activities and statistics every other week or so I noticed that one website part of a long time client's of mine which was actually pretty new which we launched a little over a month ago had a big time spike in traffic. This was unusual because this stuff just doesn't happen. There must of been a really good reason.
The website is monseynewyork.net --- So, I look into what's going on by launching a little investigation into the statistics and find out that the website was linked to on an exclusive article published by Bloomberg.com --- one of the top business media/news websites in the world. You can visit the story right here which reads about half way into the write up "Madoff’s investment business was built on personal contacts, notably in Jewish country clubs and charities. Kohn and her husband, Erwin, bought a house in Monsey (this is where it linked to our website), a New York suburb with an Orthodox Jewish community, property records show. "
The news story was published on February 19, 2009 by Matthias Wabl. I found out about it after a bit of digging but it was easy to find out everything. It's nothing new. We have many of this type of occurrences happening all the time and mentions in the mainstream media. They love to link out. So, I spotted the following first visit to the monseynewyork.net website by somebody from the Bloomberg organization in Japan on February 18, 2009 at 8:33 PM who came via Google Image Search for "monsey new york"

A little over an hour goes by after the third and final person from Bloomberg visits the web site and from there on the traffic begins to come in from all over the world. The third visitor from Bloomberg was obviously the chief editor, the guy who published the news story. So, once the story was published and made available on Bloomberg.com somewhere around 4 AM.. Traffic explodes! People from all over the world were visiting the website to see what it's all about. Russia, Austria, Bulgaria, UK, Germany, etc. Than a few hours later people from the USA start pouring in and my client got a whole lot of Real Estate inquiries that same day and the following day as well.
So what's the lesson to be learned? Well, there is money to be made in image search... It is so easy to rank on the first page of Google image search. As well as Yahoo and MSN. Anybody can do it. You just need to have many medium sized images. Something like 500 x 300 or so at minimum. They get preferential treatment and are highly favored over smaller ones. Tag it properly with the alt tags for the keywords that you are trying to rank, name the .jpg file accordingly... Write some text content on the page where you stick the images and it's a done deal. Many people ignore image search, or just don't know how to get in it.. Well, it's easier than you thought! Good luck with it :)
