So how about a case study... OK, so.. Lets see. DJ Mystik / DJ Mystic. Which one is the correct one? Well, it is DJ Mystik, but both variations get pretty much the same amount of searches and activity. So, back when I wanted to setup websites about DJ Mystik in 2006, I went ahead and registered both variations and setup websites on both dj mystik dot net and dj mystic dot net to pull in as much traffic as possible and capitalize. Two websites went up. Currently the DJ Mystik domain ranks #3 on yahoo and #2 on msn for the keyword "DJ Mystik" look it up and see for yourself. The DJ Mystic domain ranks #1 on both.
It's great having a top five ranking, sure, but why does the first domain rank #3 and #2 but the second is at #1 on both search engines? Well, it's pretty simple... You see... There is a lot more competition for the proper variation of the keyword. Right? So that is why DJ Mystik isn't right at the top. There is about 2x to 3x more search results for "DJ Mystik" than there is for DJ Mystic as well. A lot more competitors / websites. Big music websites that are very well established and have been around for years. Setting up websites in this types of situations is very easy and simple to rank them either way. If there is a good alternative variation where there is consistent search traffic you should be able to have that domain rank without doing too much work. You won't be competing against too many websites. It's great! Can pull in lots of free traffic.
OK, so you want another example... Still not convinced? Fair enough. Lets take another DJ domain. DJ Inphinity / DJ Infinity. Now, DJ Inphinity is the correct spelling and it is the one that has more search activity and traffic. So I setup both dj inphinity dot net and dj infinity dot net --- The proper keyword DJ Inphinity, the domain for it ranks #6 on yahoo and #4 on msn. For the incorrect spelling / alternative variation, DJ Infinity, that domain ranks #2 on yahoo and #1 on msn. So you see how it works, right? The proper spelling has almost 3x to 4x results and it is pretty competitive. Not so easy ranking for it at the top five, although being on the first page in top ten isn't too bad either. Ranking for the variation though was very easy. It always is.
Yes I did own all of the domains mentioned above a few years back and many other similar ones as well. I had them all setup in an on-topic network setup. They ranked right at the top over at Google as well but I sold them a while ago as I do with most of my networks. The new owners always seem to screw things up though. They put up either too many advertisements or just add certain code that just shouldn't be there. Sometimes they link out of the websites to other websites that are irrelevant. Google penalizes websites for the smallest things. Gotta be careful. Anyways, as you can see... There is money to be made off of variations and alternative spellings of keywords.
In certain countries a keyword is spelled one way and in another country it is spelled a bit different. Ranking for this types of exact match keywords is so damn easy. It does take a bit of time trying to figure those keywords and phrases out... but hey... Once you do the research and get the feel for it, you can make some nice money. I have been doing this for a long long time. It worked back in 2003 when I first started doing it. It worked in 2006 when I launched those DJ websites and it still works today. I continue to dig up lots of popular keywords and setup websites on them and have them rank at all three major search engines right at the top within the top 3 results on average within weeks of launching the websites. Try it sometime... Play around with it :)
